Appearances & Origins

Amethyst takes many different formations including geodes, clusters, tumbled stone and rock. In nature, it sometimes forms in combination with other minerals. The best way to judge the quality is to look at how deep the hue of purple is. Every continent in the world produces its own varieties of Amethyst, therefore it is a very common choice for a first stone.

Amethysts are rich in history, dating back to Ancient Greeks and Romans, Egyptian royalty, Chinese Philosophy and early civilizations of Mexico and South America. It was once regarded as the ‘Gem of fire’, a precious stone, and was worth as much as a diamond! The Playboy of the Ancient Greek world Bacchus and an innocent maiden named Amethyst gave historic legend to the crystal, being known for its properties of anti-addiction and sobriety.

Bacchus sent tigers upon Amethyst in a drunken rage and just as the tiger went to bite down Amethyst was turned swiftly into a Crystal. The Tigers lost some teeth and Bacchus lost his mojo and in his remorse swore to Amethyst he would no longer overindulge. Amethyst is now highly regarded as a stone to remind us to treat our body and mind as a sacred space too!

Chakras & Placement

Amethyst is an excellent stone for diplomats, negotiators and business people and is connected to the Temperance card in the Tarot, representing balance. It helps us to unplug from the busy and device driven world in which we live, encourages mediation, peace, and calm.

Remove unhealthy attachments to people and things, hold Amethyst before going to sleep at night to ward off insomnia and place in the bedroom to induce transcendence into a spiritual space. Amethyst resonates with the Crown Chakra and Third Eye- Your Crown Chakra may be compared to a spiritual knowing antenna.

It sends and receives energetic information relating specifically to spiritual values and your connection with the nonphysical form, the unknown or with universal ‘energy’.

The Third Eye is our center of perception and command. It directs our sight and every day understand of the world in which we live.
